My Late Mother being my first Guru and paying homage to her I made Dalia Khichudi after a very very long gap. I would refuse to eat Dalia in any form that my Mother would offer and to make me eat she would make Khichudi because she knew I doted on Khichudi. The plate would be clean in no time.

Ingredients and spices that need to be Get to make Dalia Khichudi:

  1. 1 cup Moong Dal
  2. 1 cup Dalia
  3. 2 medium size potatoes cubed
  4. 1 medium size carrot cubed
  5. 4-5 beans cut into 1” pieces
  6. 1 tsp ginger paste
  7. 1 tsp cumin powder
  8. 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  9. 1 tsp red chilli powder
  10. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  11. 1 bay leaf
  12. 2 whole red chillies
  13. 2-3 green chilies
  14. 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  15. 3 Tbsp mustard oil
  16. 2 Tbsp ghee
  17. As per taste Salt

Steps to make to make Dalia Khichudi

  1. Roast the Moong Dal in a pan for 2-3 mins on medium flame. Set aside. Roast Dalia in the same pan for 3-4 mins on medium flame. Set aside. Combine both and add water to soak for 5 mins
  2. Cube the potatoes, carrots, cut the beans. Make a ginger paste.
  3. In a wok heat mustard oil and add bay leaf, whole red chili, whole green chilies, cumin seeds. When all splutter add vegetables and cook on low flame for 2-3 mins.
  4. Add ginger paste and cook until the raw smell is gone. Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, and mix with vegetables well. Add Dal and Dalia and cook for 2-3 mins.
  5. Add salt and cook for 1 min. Add 3 cups water and mix well. On medium flame cook covered for all to cook together. Keep checking in between to see that vegetables don’t stick at the bottom.
  6. When you have hour desired consistency, add garam masala powder, ghee and keep it covered. Switch off the flame
  7. Plate with Papad Bhaja, Potol Bhaja, Aloo Bhaja and enjoy Dalia Khichudi
